We welcome all
individuals and families to our celebration of the Eucharist and our
Parish. If you are visiting, or are new to our community, please
introduce yourselves. Parish registration forms are available on the rear
bulletin board, or stop by the parish office – help us to get to know you.
We are a Christian
faith community in the Roman Catholic tradition whose foundation is Jesus
Christ as revealed in Holy Scripture and sacred tradition. Guided by the
Holy Spirit, we are called to promote Gospel values through liturgy and
worship; the faith formation of the entire community (both young and old);
the stewardship of time, talent and treasure for the good of the faith
community and the community at large to help in the building of the
Kingdom of God.
Immaculate
Conception is the only Roman Catholic Church in the Town of Hoosick and as
such draws the larger number of parishioners. Numerous Protestant
churches are located throughout the town and village. Within the village
there are two Episcopal, one Baptist, one Presbyterian, and one
non-denominational congregations. We currently have nearly
600 registered
families, of which approximately 45% are active in parish life. While
Hoosick Falls is not necessarily growing in population, several groups and
organizations actively seek to improve spiritual, living, educational, and
employment opportunities. It will be in reaching out to the people of the
village and town in an effort to meet their needs which will provide
opportunities to seek a growth in the number of active parishioners,
especially to those who have left their Church.

History:
The first recorded Roman Catholic Mass in Hoosick Falls was celebrated in
1834 by Father J. Shanahan in an old school house. Masses continued to be
held in the old schoolhouse and private residences until 1849 when a plot
of land was purchased on Church Street where the first church was
constructed.
By 1870, the number
of parishioners had increased so much that it was deemed necessary to
build a new, larger church. The cornerstone for the current structure of
brick and stone trimmings was dedicated on the 10th of December
in 1871. Shortly after 1882, an increasingly large congregation
necessitated enlarging the seating capacity. This was accomplished by
adding two transepts, vestries and a large sanctuary which made the church
cruciform and also greatly added to the appearance of the structure.
The church is
located on Main Street, about one block off State Route 22. This building
is 136 years old; seats approximately 400 people; has a large parish hall,
a conference room, a full kitchen and a pantry. The church interior underwent significant
renovations in 1999 and more recently renovations and
repairs to the roof and steeple. Additional projects will be scheduled in the near
future when financially appropriate, i.e. pointing of bricks, front step
repairs and restorative and protective measures taken for the stained glass
windows. Very little property
surrounds the church, with street parking only.
The Rectory is a
large, wood framed house, located one-half block north of the church which
also houses the Parish Offices. This building was purchased in 1927 by
the Augustinian Order after the Rectory which had been built in 1882
(now Village Primary Care) but
located much further from the church itself was sold.
St. Mary’s Cemetery
is an active cemetery, purchased by the parish circa 1862, also located on
Main Street. The day-to-day operation of the cemetery is overseen by the
Cemetery Manager. A small group of parishioners works with the manger and
parishioners in annual cleanings, preparing, maintaining, and beautifying
the grounds and Mary’s Garden.
The
parish re-instituted the practice of a Memorial Mass held at the cemetery
on Memorial Day.
The parish school,
St. Mary’s Academy, is located about a mile north of the church on Route
22, and is home to grades Pre-K through 8. Our school recently underwent
a partial roof repair.
Immaculate Conception
possesses one of the most striking, “churchly” edifices with its
magnificent windows depicting various saints of the church, and
the Blessed Virgin's outstanding main window which flows out over the entire interior.
The beautiful Sanctuary and House for the Lord’s Tabernacle give special
meaning to our liturgy and praise to God.
